FC Andorra is a football club based in Andorra la Vella, the capital city of the Principality of Andorra. The club was founded in 1942 as Unió Esportiva Andorra and has a long and storied history that includes multiple name changes, league promotions, and relegations.
The early years of the club were relatively unremarkable. The team competed in various regional leagues in Catalonia and occasionally played friendly matches against teams from neighboring countries.
In 1980, the club changed its name to Futbol Club Andorra and joined the Spanish football league system, beginning in the regional leagues of Catalonia. Over the next several years, FC Andorra worked its way up through the ranks of the Spanish league system.
In 1990, the team reached the fourth tier of Spanish football, known as Tercera División. In 1995, FC Andorra won promotion to the third tier, Segunda División B, for the first time in its history.
FC Andorra remained in Segunda División B for the next several seasons, but in 1998 the club suffered relegation back to Tercera División. The team spent the next several years yo-yoing between the third and fourth tiers of Spanish football, with occasional appearances in the Copa del Rey, the premier cup competition in Spanish football.
In 2018, FC Andorra was purchased by the company Kosmos, which is owned by Gerard Piqué, well known for being at that time a professional player for FC Barcelona and world champion in 2010 with the Spanish national team. Kosmos is a sports and entertainment company that aims to revolutionize the world of sports by investing in clubs, events, and athletes.
The purchase of FC Andorra was part of Kosmos' larger strategy to create a network of sports organizations that could work together to promote and grow the sports industry, not exclusively linked to football but also in other sports, such as tennis, etc.
Under the ownership of Kosmos, FC Andorra has undergone a significant transformation. In 2019, FC Andorra achieved a double promotion, since in addition to winning a place in the third division, it was able to buy too the vacant place of the defunct Reus Deportiu CF in Second Division B.
The team has experienced a surge in popularity and attracted new fans from Andorra, France, Catalonia and Spain. The club has also made significant investments in its facilities and staff, and finally in May 2022 achieved the goal to be promoted in Segunda División, commercially known as 'LaLiga SmartBank' for sponsorship reasons, the men's second professional association football division of the Spanish football league system.
The future of FC Andorra is bright, with a dedicated ownership group and passionate fanbase. The club has a long and storied history, and its recent transformation under the ownership of Kosmos is just the latest chapter in its evolution. As the team continues to compete in the spanish football league system, it will undoubtedly face new challenges and opportunities. But one thing is certain: the spirit of FC Andorra will continue to drive the team forward, as it has for over 80 years.
